Knowledge Spam | What Does "Third World Country" Mean?
icy; Monday, December 29, 2008Reads: 809

The term "third world" was first intended to refer to the way those countries were discovered; and because most of them were born as colonies of more powerful nations before they became independent nations. The term later on became popular as a way to denominate countries that have "not developed" or are in the process of "developing". In the colonial era, western imperialist countries exploited these countries (a bit harsh here, but no pun intended :)). Once imperialism ended, these countries were left to take care of themselves, something most colonial powers never allowed. These countries were left to face the challenges of nation and state-building on their own for the first time.

Also, during the cold war era the world was partitioned to three segments:
First World: the United States and its allies.
Second World: the Soviet Union and its allies.
Third World: Non-aligned and neutral countries

Nowadays, the term “Third World” is used as a categorical label to describe states that are considered to be underdeveloped in terms of their economy or level of industrialization, globalization, standard of living, health, education or other criteria for "advancement".

Bu da gecer ya Hû!
icy; Tuesday, December 23, 2008Reads: 283

Onlarin anlattiklarindan, Sakir'in bolgenin en zengin kisilerinden birisi oldugunu anlar. Dervis, Sakir'in ciftligine varir. Cok iyi karsilanir, iyi misafir edilir, yer icer, dinlenir.

Bazen gorunen, gercegin kendisi degildir. Bu da gecer..."

Dervis, Sakir'in ciftliginden ayrildiktan sonra bu soz uzerine uzun uzun dusunur.

Bir zaman sonra, Dervis'in yolu yine ayni bolgeye duser. Sakir'i hatirlar, bir ugramaya karar verir. Yolda rastladigi koylulerle sohbet ederken Sakir'den soz eder.

"Haa o Sakir mi?" der koyluler, "O iyice fakirledi, simdi Haddad'in yaninda calisiyor." Dervis hemen Haddad'in ciftligine gider, Sakir'i bulur. Eski dostu yaslanmistir, uzerinde eski pusku giysiler vardir. Sakir ve ailesi uc yildir Haddad'in hizmetkâridir. Sakir, bu kez Dervis'i son derece mutevazi olan evinde misafir eder. Kit kanaat yemegini onunla paylasir...

Sultanin adamlari da bilge Dervis'i bulup yardim isterler.

ibare, Selcuklular zamaninda iran taraflarina gecer; ama Farscalasip "in niz beguzered" olur;

This is why I love photography. This is also why I do not love human-kind. There is no explanation for such a sentient being's endless thirst for conflict, pain and suffering...

Dear Cheers...
icy; Monday, December 08, 2008Reads: 208

I end most of my communiqué with a "Cheers", instead of "regards" or "best". It just means "thank you". And in all my naivety, I thought this was common knowledge.

The other day, I wrote some company (Dell) something for support, ending the email with my regular "Cheers" as usual (of course, as in other closings of formal letters, I do include my full name and address at the bottom of my emails).

Today they replied: "Dear Cheers, thank you for contacting us..."

At first I thought "Oh, they must be from India" but that can not be, as "Cheers" is actually British English and Indians, being an old British Colony speak fluent British English. So I figured, this company is no longer outsourcing their support line to India, but keeping here it in the U.S. :))

Hah!

I've been coding this site for myself since 2004. It will never be complete. I have accepted this. I'll always take one look at any part of it and wonder why I did what I did the way I did it and not this other way that could've been, not necessarily better, but, what if... Or some new framework will be released and I will be tempted to use the "new" one instead of the old one. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There is much truth to these words.

"A tailor can never mend his own dress." - Turkish proverb.
