Crysis Single Player Custom Maps

If you are like me, whence you get to the alienated environments and levels, crysis will feel all Doom III-ish and plain old boring. I was on the merge of uninstalling it when I found out about this site: CryMod.com

I downloaded a couple of custom single player missions and levels, haven't played them yet, but hell I feel enthusiastic about Crysis, again!

One thing attracted my attention though. When a good thing is over done and over consumed, it creates a disgust. I was browsing the custom missions and every single one of them is an "island story". OK I get it. The game's engine renders lush vegetation and water so realistically that it is beyond belief, but dude, come on, 100 "island missions". Hell no!. And at one page I found this custom map with a description "for those who are fed up with the island, here's a desert map".... ahahah. now that's what I'm talking about. Misery loves company. It's good to know that I am not the only weirdo out there.

And finally I learned the difference between Crysis and Crysis Warhead: None! It's the same game, you just play the other character Psycho and follow the same story line through a different angle and chase another general on the other side of the island. Wohooo. More money for EA! This Pscyho dudse keeps on disappearing on the single player scenarios and reappearing on stupid places just to drive you crazy. You feel like "darn it dude, where've you been?"

Though I am still trying to find out what the heck is Crysis Wars. And the multiplayer portion of Crysis Warhead is now called Crysis Wars. What the frack. Who is the marketing genius behind all these closely related and misconception prone labels and titles? Bugs Bunny?

I loved the scenery in this custom map. Everything looks awesome. There are a couple of "rock bugs" here and there, but I can live with it. (Rock bugs are bugs that arise when the rock models are not optimized and you have spaces in between surfaces. The intersections are not calculated correctly and sometimes you slid from a cliff and get stuck in that space. There is no way out but to grenade yourself and reload from your last save).

This is by far the best modification I have ever seen and played in my life. If you are a fan of Crysis and want to see more of that CryTek engine in action, you have got to see this thing. Amazing, just amazing. The DOF is by default on and distant objects (like 100 feet away) are blurrier than nearer objects. Brilliant use of water and reflections, just amazing. You gotta see it to believe it. The story sucks though, the voice and the acting is just ludicrous and downright annoying at times. But who cares.

You can find the download file in Crymod Modding Portal

Crysis Warhead | The Expansion Pack
icy | Monday, December 01, 2008 5:43 AM

Warhead is actually just an expansion pack on Crysis, although it is being sold as a standalone package. Meaning you don't have to own Crysis to play Crysis Warhead. It's the same engine, but a much better put together product. The skins of the weapons are just awesome. The AI acts much much better. And the radio chatter is just superb. The storyline, except the alien part, makes a lot of sense and I loved the Psycho character - screw Nomad is what I say. But, of course, like all other expansion packs, the story this one brings is waaaay to short. I wish instead of distrbuting the entire game engine, EA would just release the same DVD with only a add on story line. You know, instead of 80% engine, 20% content ratio, I wish we had 100% content and total dependancy on Crysis (if you want the addon, buy the game sort of thing). Alas, since EA is after the money selling 100 "AddOn" packages < selling 100 full blown game packages (nobody would pay the full game price for an addon package so they would make less money). Anyway, it's totally worth to buy Crysis Warhead if you absolutely loved Crysis. Otherwise, don't bother is what I say.

I did not try Fraps with Warhead, since it caused a crash on Crysis. The screenshots, again, lack most of the realtime filtering that is going on on my screen, but they are nice nonetheless.

I've been coding this site for myself since 2004. It will never be complete. I have accepted this. I'll always take one look at any part of it and wonder why I did what I did the way I did it and not this other way that could've been, not necessarily better, but, what if... Or some new framework will be released and I will be tempted to use the "new" one instead of the old one. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There is much truth to these words.
